On to the nail stuff!
I've been asked a few times to show how I arrived at this mani below. It's pretty simple, it's a sponge gradient, but I will deconstruct it in this post for you all in this tutorial. For other tutorials I've posted so far, go to the TIPS & TRICKS section on the top.

First off, I've seen special sponges being sold for the purpose of sponging manis and think it's unnecessary to spend money on them. I tried a regular dish washing sponge like this one and found that it works well.
First I cut the sponge's soft edge in a long strip.
Next I cut the long strip into little manageable pieces...
... and ended up with a bunch of little sponges, about the same size as the ones being sold.
With the sponges ready, I picked colours to use for this mani that I thought would work well together.
L-R-> Essence Replay, Essence Fall For Me, Catrice Lucky In Lilac
I painted my nails with Essence Replay, but obviously you can use your own colours for a mani like this.
Next I sponged from the bottom up with Essence Fall For Me, leaving some of the green showing on half the nail.
You could use any surface to put your lacquer on for the sponging, but I use a stamping plate, just because it's easy to clean up later.

Then simply sponge the nail in a pattern you like. I sponged from the bottom up on about a third of the nail, leaving some of the blue showing.
If you find that you sponged too much of one colour, just go over it with the other colour to balance each nail until you reach a desired effect. Once I was happy with the look, I was left with this three colour gradient.
I know that in the photos, the gradient looks a little rough, but I promise it looks a little smoother and nicer in real life, probably because you don't look as close at your nails as you do in macro photography.
Of course, when I did this mani, I immediately thought that it would make a good base for a fauxnad, so I used this Bundle Monster plate BM-210 and Wet 'n Wild Black Creme and stamped it.
And of course this is the final result. I hope you all try a gradient mani at least once. It's easy to do and looks pretty neat. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate and ask.
Till next time!

Thanks for posting the tutorial! I'll sure try it myself :D
ReplyDeleteWelcome and yes, try it, it's super easy and looks interesting when done.
DeleteSo pretty. Thanks for the tutorial, I never even thought to use a sponge like that and i have heaps around the house. Cant wait to try this. Great colours too!! :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome. I like to get things cheaper if possible so I thought, why not try this sponge and it worked so good that it'd be a shame to spend more money on special sponges for this purpose.
Deletevery nice! the base colors are gorgeous choices!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm a fan of purples and teals so to combine them was a no brainer.
DeleteThis is so beautiful!! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteThank you so much for this! I guess my using a regular kitchen sponge with the green scrubby on one side wasn't so silly after all!!! I didn't cut it up or use a new one-so maybe next time!! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. And yeah the kitchen sponge works but I wouldn't use the green, scrubby side.
DeleteThanks for this tutorial. I like your tip about using tweezers to pick up the sponge :-)
ReplyDeleteWelcome. It only makes sense, right? I did the sponging once while holding the sponge with my fingers and I ended up mucking up my mani, so tweezers it is.
DeleteThis is gorgeous! I Love gradient manis and I think this one looks fabulous, especially with the stamping design!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I like to find different base colours for stamping, now I'll have to try more of these.
Deletethank you very much for this useful tutorial! x
ReplyDeleteSure thing, you're welcome. I'd love to do some others, but it's never the right time to put them together.
Deletei still love this mani and AHEM globby is soooooo a word xxx :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, is it really?! And here I thought I was being clever by making stuff up.
DeleteExcellent tutorial. Thanks for the tip on using the dishwashing sponge too!
ReplyDeleteThank you and you're welcome, I'm all about the frugal and if it works, then why not?
DeleteThat's so creative! I love it.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteJust a quick question. . i've seen other bloggers who have wet their sponge before using a colour to sponge it on . .did you do that at all?
ReplyDeleteI did not, but that's an interesting thought. It might help look less dot-like and more even maybe. Hmm, I'll have to give that a try.
DeleteI have a hard time stamping...Igot the kit you see on tv. DOes it just take a bit of practice or should I try different plates?
ReplyDeleteQuestion where do you buy the plates to stamp the nails
